Casper and The Cookies

2 09 2009

The art pop band from Athens, GA stopped by the Relay Recording Studios to perform for our cameras. After putting on some fine vintage apparel and applying some glittery eye lashes, the trio kicked things off with “Sharp”.

Kevin Devine

17 08 2009

It was our lucky day. Despite his beloved Mets being in the dumper, New York singer/songwriter Kevin Devine dropped by Relay Recording August 4th to play tracks from his latest “Brother’s Blood.” Devine may be the most affable person we’ve ever met in music. Later that week he rejoined his God Damned Band for a well received set at Lollapalooza in Chicago.

Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers

21 07 2009

During a recent tour stop in Columbus, OH, Samantha Crain and her band the Midnight Shivers were kind enough to spend an afternoon of coffee drinking and recording with us at the Relay Recording studio. They played three tracks off their debut LP “Songs in the Night” for us (and you) to enjoy…

Willy Mason

16 07 2009

We finally dusted of these tapes from a few months back when Martha’s Vineyard singer/songwriter Willy Mason came through Columbus, OH. Willy was touring solo across the Midwest and hung out at Relay Recording for a few hours to sing three new tunes (the titles listed here are actually tentative, seeing as the songs didn’t really have names yet.)

Angel Taylor

19 05 2009

Perhaps this won’t sit well with serious, career minded artists. Angel Taylor had no intention of any of this happening. No major label deal, no touring, no nothing. The 20 year old from Castaic, California was content writing poetry, and singing for family members. Heck her first plane trip was to meet with her eventual record label.

“Love Travels” is her debut. Label mate John Mayer is a fan.

Angel stopped by Relay Recording while on tour in May 2009. We also interview Angel in January 2009 at the Sundance Film Festival. Watch that interview here.

Hana Pestle

4 05 2009

They call Montana “Big Sky Country.” That seems to be the limit for what Billings singer/songwriter Hana Pestle can become.

Born in Atlanta, Pestle’s family moved to Salt Lake City and settled in Montana. Pestle received a guitar for Christmas in the 6th grade and by 8th Grade was performing live. A 2005 DVD of one of her hometown performances ended up the hands of record producer Michael Herring and former Evanescence member Ben Moody. The pair of industry vets took Pestle under their wing recording an e.p. and teaming her with producer arranger Dave Campbell. Working with Campbell, who happens to be Beck’s father was quite a coup for a teenaged artist. Campbell is rightly recognized as a genius arranger. The project was shopped to the majors, but will come out on Moody’s FNR imprint instead.

The Floorwalkers

1 05 2009

Sometimes a band can’t get off the ground, in a real way, until they get their name right. In their formative days, Chardon, Ohio natives The Floorwalkers were known as Money For Gyros. Moving to Columbus and taking their name from “Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas,” The Floorwalkers were on their way.

Under The Floorwalkers moniker they started humbly with some acoustic gigs. Today, they’ve evolved into a popular Ohio live draw keeping themselves quite busy on the club circuit. After releasing a couple EP’s and demos, The Floorwalkers are set to release their debut LP in the Summer of 2009.

Download “Up the Vine” here.

Hotchacha

1 05 2009

The girls mommy and daddy warned you about in 7th grade.

According to the band penned bio, these Cleveland girls jammed for three months, drank lots of beer, and peed in their practice space trash can. It ain’t exactly forty days in the wilderness, but it seems to fit. Their first show was filled with much rocking and more than a few people with light sensibilities being offended. That’s OK who needs em.

Their debut “Rifle I Knew You When You Were A Pistol” is out now and gives us much hope for rock’s future.
